Schaffhausen, the city of pure beauty!

Schaffhausen is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever seen. After a visit at Rhine Falls, where it was very very crowded, we decided to visit the city of Schaffhausen which was only 5 km from the waterfall. And we have discovered one of the prettiest cities we have ever seen in Switzerland.

Old Renaissance house in Schaffhausen
First of all it was very quiet, a silece that lets one enjoy the architecture and the soul of a place. Then we have been struck by the beauty of the Renaissance buildings that are in perfect shape. Schaffhausen is famous for the small, stylish balconies of the houses. Each house from the old city has a different balcony, all in perfect shape, decorated with flowers, plants or sculptures. As a matter of fact there are 35 places in Schaffhausen that are listed as Swiss heritage sites of national significance. Among them the impressive Munot fortress or the house "zum Ritter at Vordergasse 65" that you can see in the picture above. Also see our video at the end of the article to get a glimpse at the famous houses form Schaffhausen.

It is a city full of history, its first mention being in 1045 as "Villa Scafhusun". Now, it has a population of around 36.000 persons and 28% of them being resident foreign nationals. It is also the capital of the Canton Schaffhausen.

A strange fact about this place is that it has been bombed, by mistake, in World War II, by US Air Force that was targeting a place in Germany. More than 100 people died during the attack.

If you are in the area and also want to visit Europe's biggest waterfall, read our article about Rhine Falls.
You can reach Schaffhausen by train, by bike or by car. If you came by car try to find a parking place at the railway station (Schaffhausen SBB) because it is free and the old city starts just opposite the railway.

There are plenty of small restaurants in the old city, mainly with Italian cuisine. We ate at a place called Casanova, and it was very good. You will also be able to enjoy a great icecream or have a siesta with a good cup of coffee at a restaurant along the river Rhine.

There are plenty of activities that one can enjoy in Schaffhausen: several thematic tours of the city (wine, gourmet, histoic etc), many bike tracks or cruises on the river Rhine. You can find all the information you need on the Schaffhausen site.

So go and enjoy Schaffhausen, the city of pure beauty!
