A great view from the Swiss hike of Bisse de Torrent Neuf

In order to better understand the route, it is important to clarify the name. Bisse, in the Valais area, means a channel, a few centimeters wide, used for irrigation or water supply for the mills. And "torrent neuf" means new torrent. So, we're talking about an alpine hike on the edge of a former water channel. Bisse de Torrent Neuf dates back to 1400's when several channels were united in one, hence the name. The channel has been used, with continuous improvements, until 1934, so for more than 500 years it has been an important source of water for the agriculture in the area.

The hike of Bisse de Torrent Neuf

With a length of about 10 kilometers the hike is rather easy and extraordinarily spectacular. As you walk you will have beautiful views of the Bernese Alps, you will cross 4 suspended bridges long of several tens of meters, you will pass by the majestic bronze bear, you will be able to pull the bell at the small chapel Notre Dame de Torrent Neuf, you will cross the Mougerin tunnel and you can make a picnic in the final area of the route. The trail is a 1 meter wide track and it takes about 2 hours to pass from one end to the other. And it's about the same time getting back to where you have started. Here you can see a map of the Bisse deTorrent Neuf route.

How to get to Bisse de Torrent Neuf

The simplest way is by car. You can choose the city of Saviese as the point of arrival (7 km from Sion) and, as you approach, you will see many road signs towards Bisse de Torrent Neuf. It is a perfectly paved road that passes through the gorgeous vineyards of Valais and climbs up to about 1000m. In the beginning of the walk trail to Bisse du Torrent Neuf there are 2 open-air car parks, both free of charge.

In the end some advices

Although the trail is easy, it is good to be equipped for hiking, especially with appropriate footwear and pants. That's because the soil is pretty sandy so you can easily dirty the city shoes. Also, there are many roots of trees and some stones in the soil, so appropriate shoes are important.
Take with you water, fruits and some food, it's still a 4-hour route! You can make a superb picnic at the end of the route, in the Broc area where you have an alpine meadow and a fabulous landscape.
